Maria, a piece, of tender meat
2024
21x29cm

A lamb chop dressed in blue, wending it’s way between trees on a meadow with yellow flowers.

This piece was conceived on the occasion of “Salon De La Muse”, an exhibition at Aaimachine, Lieven Segers studio. Contributors where prompted with: “what does your muse look like and can you translate this to an A4-format?”

Never having thought of muses my mind drifted to iconic muses and how they have always been female, youthfull, squeeky clean and immortalized. I saw the opportunity to make a piece that would wither in time, fester, rot and stench and hoped it would be beautiful. I made a semblance of mary out a lamb chop and floorcloth. The religious symbolics of the lamb and the sexist assumption of cleaning utensils made an image exceeding my expectations.

On display at Aaimachine.
