Maria, een stuk, vlees

Mary, a piece, of meat

2024
21x29cm

A lamb chop dressed in blue, wending it’s way between trees on a meadow with yellow flowers.

This piece was conceived on the occasion of “Salon De La Muse”, an exhibition at Aaimachine, Lieven Segers studio. Contributors where prompted with: “what does your muse look like and can you translate this to an A4-format?”

Having had no particular preconception of muses, my mind drifted to iconic muses and how they have always been portrayed: female, youthfull, squeeky clean with immortalized beauty. I saw the opportunity to make a muse that would wither in time, fester, rot and reek and hoped it would be beautiful. This Resulted in a lamb chop and floorcloth, vacuum-sealed and resembling Mary. The religious symbolics of the lamb, the history of cleaning in the rag and the attempt to conserve the flesh made an image I am very fond of.

(Later this work mysteriously dissapeared from my basement freezer.)

On display at Aaimachine.
